Tron: Ares (Disney+) – I wish I had seen this in the theatre, as it’s an astoundingly gorgeous spectacle, both visually and aurally. And it was noticeably shot in Vancouver, too, which is cool. I know why this didn’t get any love when it was released theatrically, but I thought it more than delivered.

Kissing the Beehive (Jonathan Carroll) – After every two or three new novels I read, I re-read one by Jonathan Carroll (my all-time favourite author). Because it’s been a number of years since I’ve read any of his books, I don’t remember them much at all, so it’s basically like I’m reading them for the first time all over again, which, because they’re all so good, is a tremendous gift. Kissing the Beehive is about an author who returns to his childhood town in order to write a book about a murdered girl whose body he discovered when he was a teenager. Like all of Carroll’s works, it has fascinatingly complex characters and an immensely compelling narrative, and its beautiful prose brims with ideas and insights

Black Belt Jones (DVD) – This 1974 blaxploitation kung-fu movie somehow manages to ride the fine line of being ridiculously fun without being ridiculously bad. I absolutely dug it.

Best Medicine (Fox) – If, like me, you’re looking for an antidote to all of the grim, murder-centric TV shows out there, I highly recommend this new Josh Charles (The Good Wife’s Will Gardiner) network TV comedy drama. This Northern Exposure/House mash-up – it’s about an uptight surgeon who relocates to a small East Coast fishing town to be the local doctor – is the kind of quirky, pleasant show they just don’t make any more (well, okay, obviously they do, as this show currently exists, but I think you know what I mean).
