One of greatest things I’ve ever recorded

In the spirit of writing/making what you love, which is something I’ve always endeavoured to do with everything I’ve ever created, I thought it was appropriate that my first entry in this blog should be about one of the best things I’ve ever recorded, something that, since its inception/capturing, has provided endless delight for me and my family

This is something I caught on video while collecting material for a short film of mine called When They Were Little. The subjects/stars are my niece and two nephews. At the time, they were five, three, and seven, respectively. I wanted to capture kids at play; specifically, kids at play without the presence of adults. In order to do this, I shot a whole lot of random footage without having any idea how it might ultimately be incorporated into the final project.

This particular bit occurred in a playground, after I’d taken the kids to 7-11 for Slurpees. I won’t bother to detail what happens in this nine-second clip,* except to say that it involves my then-three-year-old nephew, and that what he experiences pretty much encapsulates the entirety of the human experience. I think it gets better and better the more times you watch it.

* I didn’t end up using this clip in the movie, because there wasn’t a place for it and because my nephew is, regrettably, slightly out of focus.
