Resident Evil (Zach Cregger, 2026)) could have been subtitled, “What the fuck ?!,” as this phrase is repeatedly uttered by the film’s protagonist (played by Austin Abrams) as he stumbles his way through one bizarre, life-and-death situation after another, all the while encountering a parade of increasingly grotesque nightmare creatures.

I’ve never played the video games this is based upon nor have I seen any of the previous Resident Evil movie adaptations, and I would have skipped this one, too, had it not been written and directed by Zach Cregger. Cregger’s previous movies, Barbarian and Weapons, are two of my recent favourites. and this third outing of his is also very good. While not as good as his other two, I’d say it’s as good as a Resident Evil movie could probably ever hope to be, as it’s entirely immersive and fast-moving, is very well shot and directed, has a terrific central performance from Abrams, is super gory, and, most importantly, is just a whole lot of fun.
